The Benefits of Mantra & Why I Love It! ❤️

Updated: 6 days ago

When I first walked into a Kundalini Yoga class, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Having played a lot of sports, I wasn’t exactly the most bendy person, but I had always enjoyed yoga. Still, this new Kundalini Yoga experience felt different.

To be honest, the first couple of classes seemed a bit unusual compared to other yoga I had practiced. However, I would leave the class knowing somehow that things had shifted.

One of the first things we did in each class, after a few deep breaths, was “tune in” with two mantras: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo and Aad Guray Nameh. I didn’t know them, so I would initially just sat in silence, listening. These mantras are simple and easy to learn, but at first, I found the chanting a little strange.

Like many others, it took me some time to build up the confidence to join in. But now, chanting mantras has become my favourite part of the class. And now that I teach, I’ve learned to lead the mantras with confidence (and, I hope, a good tone! 😉).

Mantras are powerful chants that help us connect with our subconscious. These sacred sounds create vibrations that resonate throughout both our physical and energetic bodies.

So, why do we chant mantras? Besides calming the mind and grounding us in the present, mantras stimulate the endocrine system, help release emotional blockages, shift our energy, and even assist in overcoming our karma. I personally love how these sounds vibrate through my body and uplift my spirit when I chant them.

In Kundalini Yoga, mantras are often in Gurmukhi or Sikh script. The practice of chanting them supports the rise of kundalini energy from the base of the spine to the crown chakra at the top of the head.

Everything in the universe is energy, and all energy vibrates at different frequencies. These frequencies correspond to specific sounds. In fact, every frequency is, in essence, a sound. Everything in the universe has its own unique sound vibration.

Mantras are the language of the universe. They are tuning instruments that help us connect to particular universal frequencies. For example, chanting MAAAAA helps us align with the frequency of the Divine Mother and the sacred Feminine, while chanting RAAAAA connects us with the energy of the sun.

When we chant a specific sound, our bodies and energy fields resonate with that frequency. This resonance creates a connection, allowing our energy to sync with the vibrations of the mantra. Our energy then aligns with the energy of our thoughts and the sounds we create, shaping the events and environments around us.

A lot of what we attract into our lives is shaped by our subconscious programming. Mantras act as powerful tools to "reprogram" us, clearing old patterns and creating new ones. They also serve as access codes to different channels in our mind, unlocking pathways we might not otherwise be able to reach with rational thought or intention. These universal codes elevate our consciousness, allowing us to access higher spiritual realms.

It's important to remember that each person experiences mantras in their own unique way. There are countless mantras in Gurmukhi and Sanskrit, and you might need to try a few before you find the ones that resonate most with you.

As a teacher, I incorporate mantras into my daily practice each morning. I also enjoy listening to them around the house or in the car. The energy and vibration uplift me, helping me feel connected to my higher self and higher consciousness.

With so much mantra in my daily life—whether through practice or listening—I’ve even noticed myself singing mantras in my sleep! It’s always fascinating to wake up and discover which mantra my soul has chosen while I’ve been hanging out on the astral plane😊. I see it as a song request from my soul - so I honour that mantra request and be sure to incorporate it into my morning practice. It feels so joyful!

If you’re new to mantras, there are plenty of albums you can listen to as you begin your journey. Spirit Voyage has a great selection, with collections like Mantras for Healing, Mantras for Prosperity, Mantras for Protection, and Mantras for Divine Grace. Happy chanting! x
